T.R.A.C.E. Unit

The TRAFFIC AND CRIMINAL ENFORCEMENT UNIT is comprised of a team of uniformed investigators who are responsible for traffic enforcement and assisting the investigative Division with criminal and drug investigations. The “T.R.A.C.E.” Unit also works with neighboring law enforcement agencies in participation with the North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program.  

Captain Mike Burns

Has served as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer for over 27 years. Captain Burns was employed with the Lexington Police Department from 1996 to 2007. During his time with the Lexington Police Department, he worked in multiple areas of law enforcement including the Patrol Division, K-9, Special Operations, Traffic, and Vice / Narcotics Units.

Since moving to the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office in 2007 Captain Burns has worked in the Patrol and Vice / Narcotics Divisions. In 2019 Captain Burns was promoted from the rank of Lieutenant in the Vice / Narcotics Unit to the Captain over Investigative Services.

During his career, Captain Burns has been involved in nearly every aspect of law enforcement. Captain Burns spent six years as a Federal Task Force Officer for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms where he was responsible for working federal gun and drug crimes. He is currently a Federal Task Force Officer with the Department of Homeland Security and has held that position for over 8 years. Captain Burns currently holds an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate and an Advanced Service Award which were presented by the North Carolina Department of Justice. In 2018 Captain Burns was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the North Carolina Narcotics Officers Enforcement Association.
